I am always a big fan of studies, because I hope they are based on Facts and they can affirm or deny our conception of something.
The latest report from the Pew Research Center’s Project for Excellence in Journalism, “New Media, Old Media findings.” More than 99% of the stories linked to in blogs came from legacy outlets such as newspapers and broadcast networks. And just four – the BBC, CNN, the New York Times and the Washington Post accounted for fully 80% of all links.”
According to the study, there was no original news at all on Twitter. “Here half (50%) of the links were to legacy outlets; 40% went to web-only news sources such as Mashable and CNET. The remaining 10% went to wire stories or non-news sources…”
I have to say there is a lot of regurgitated “stuff” out there. I think most people who have used twitter for any period of time would agree. Also now with Facebook making suggestions and recommendations of things you may like it is only encouraging re-hash after re-hash. We all know that this is true of the Music industry it seems at the moment. We have artists covering the cover of the mashup up of the re-mix cover.
Well I think we can all agree on another thing that Social Media is here to stay, so what it really need is content. Good new content, and this is where business and organizations of all kinds can win out.
But I will say immediately that content building can seem like a daunting undertaking. Image what it must be like to be a Radio talk show host and you have 2hrs of content to fill everyday. New topics, try to maintain interest from a diverse listener base. No easy task. You have to have the gift of the Gab correct?
Well when it comes to content for you to promote your business or organization, who better than you. You are the expert the one with the knowledge, the person who has all the content up in your head. You don’t have to have the gift of the Gab you already have the blood sweat and tears of putting a company together. And believe it or not that is the kind of content people want to know about. And you usually don’t have to worry about trying to keep the attention of 1000 of people; you are just concerned about your demographic that buys your product and service. And the other good thing about that is that they are usually looking for you.
Getting your business involved in Social Media should not be jumped into with out a strategy and I recommend you mix it in with any other form of advertising you may be doing. But the nice part is you can get involved for a low cost, but you will have to throw some time, effort and download some of that great material that is in your head down onto paper and then down on to the web. If you are not a big keyboard fanatic than grab a video camera and upload to Youtube.
The same study that mentioned no content was original, did lead on to say that any non-mainstream media content that was talked about online was viewed originally via YouTube.
The great thing about you adding original content is that Mainstream Media are also looking for it. Reports scan through the web the same way we do looking for a story to fill that 2hr radio segment and yes you could be the one who is adding value to their show and your business.
